Amorpha fruticosa  Leadplant, Indigo Bush, False Indigo
DECIDUOUS SHRUB.  Alternate pinnate leaves with large smooth oval leaflets.  No thorns. No other desert shrub with pinnate leaves has such large leaflets.  Long showy spike of tiny purple flowers in early summer.  In the Empires, a rare semi-riparian species found as isolated plants in sand washes and in a small seep-fed canyon among granite tors.
